A key factor in the process of biomass briquette production is the method of drying out the biomass. Various approaches, such as torrefaction, carbonization, or different levels of pyrolysis, can be employed by manufacturers.
 
The degree of compaction is another aspect that influences production. Torrefaction of biomass, for instance, wood or grain, involves a mild form of pyrolysis at temperatures typically ranging between 200 and 320 °C. This process modifies the properties of biomass to deliver a higher quality fuel for combustion and gasification. It results in a relatively dry product, curbing its potential for organic decomposition.
 
A piston press can create solid briquettes for various purposes, while screw extrusion is used to compact biomass into loose, uniform briquettes, which can substitute for coal in cofiring. This technique creates a toroidal, or doughnut-shaped, briquette. The center hole in the briquette enlarges the surface area, leading to a higher combustion rate.
